EXPERTS FROM VARIOUS STREAMS JOIN HANDS TO FIGHT OA
Bengaluru : Have you ever seen an Ayurveda and an allopathy doctor joining hands to solve human miseries? Definitely it is a rarity. For the first time in Bengaluru, orthopaedic surgeons, rheumatologists, geneticists, yoga therapists, naturopathy specialists, Ayurvedic consultants, radiologists, physiotherapists and pain consultants joined hands to bring relief for the people suffering from osteoarthritis (OA). OA is the most common chronic condition of the joints. It can affect any joint, but it occurs most often in knees, hips, lower back and neck, small joints of the fingers and the bases of the thumb and big toe.
PEOPLE TREE HOSPITALS in association with Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA), S-VYASA University, Karnataka Orthopaedic Association (KOA), Indian Rheumatology Association, Karnataka Chapter (IRA), Bangalore Orthopaedic Society (BOS) & Karnataka State Physiotherapy Federation (KSPF) organised the OACON 201 on Sunday; a unique conference, an amalgamation of all major specialties coming together for dissipating-“Everything you wanted to know about Evidence based management of Osteoarthritis.”
As part of the conference, all specialists treating OA came together on the same Platform. Orthopaedic Surgeons, Rheumatologists, Yoga and Naturopathy specialists, Geneticists, Interventional, Pain specialists, Physiotherapists, Ayurveda Specialists etc, joined hands to make arthritis pain free. The highlights of the programme was presentation of evidence-based presentations, debates, panel discussions, treatment guide lines, breakout sessions for non-total knee replacement options for osteoarthritis and complementary and alternative therapy treatment, hands-on workshops and free paper sessions etc.
Speaking on the occasion, senior joint replacement surgeon and People Tree Hospitals CEO Dr Chandrashekar Chikkamuniyappa said that by 2025, India was poised to become the osteoarthritis capital of the world with 60 million cases! “What is even more shocking is that people in the age group of 30 – 50 are falling prey to the disease, which has a reputation for catching the elderly, especially women. Is there a way out? There are many streams of medicines in the world. But often, they tend to be at loggerheads. For instance, it’s traditionally believed that Ayurveda and Allopathy just don’t get along well. However, the former has attained recognition all over the world thanks to its focus on wholesome health. So, the big question is can we have an integrated approach towards treating the OA knee? And thus, came into existence OACON, an annual conference that brings prominent experts ranging from Ayurvedic practitioners to yoga therapists and orthopaedic surgeons to physiotherapists of national and international repute. This year’s OACON attracted experts from various streams and brought them under one roof for discussions,” he said adding the mantra of the hour is-“ Together, Lets’ Make Arthritis Pain-free. No attempt had been made to bring all these specialists together on a single platform to obtain consensus until 2015, when we did a small experiment at OACON 2015. To our surprise this program was oversubscribed and specialists from all the branches shared the same stage, first time ever. All the experts presented their evidence for their treatment suggestions, which was well received by the experts in other fields and the interactions were very fruitful, “he added.
