Bengaluru : The obesity & overweight problem now affects around 7 pc to 11 per cent of kids in Bengaluru! Shockingly, the obesity problem is rising in Bengaluru and it is increasing faster among children than adults, according to a study conducted by city’s enthusiastic paediatrician. People Tree Hospitals paediatric department led by Dr Supraja Chandrasekar undertook a research in the city which showed that obesity and overweight was prevalent in 7 to 11 per cent of kids. However, the obesity is as higher as 7.2 pc to 14.4 pc in kids above12 years in high school.

Dr Supraja said that one of the reasons for the alarming change in the health quotient of children including obesity is that, “Everything about today’s children has changed- The way they play; what they eat and how they spend time with family ”

For the purpose of this extensive research, the team analysed over 5,000 school going children. The total number of students screened were 5,156 from three schools located in three different directions of the city who were falling under the age group of 3 -17 years.

Nearly one fifth of children were either overweight or obese; One third of students had dental problems; Quarter of the children had eye problems [ 26%] requiring correction [glasses] about a fifth of them [22%] had pallor suggesting possible anaemia and high blood pressure [1.2%] was also noted in the older age group children who were either over weight or obese.

Healthy Life Style is the need of the hour

According to PEOPLE TREE’s research, one of the main reasons for the problems among kids could be a combination of various factors. These included; compulsive media, excessive eating of junk food and parents not spending enough time with kids etc. “Ironically, children are over fed these days but are undernourished,” Dr Supraja Chandrasekar adds. She said that the best way to alter the choices of food and lifestyle of kids is to directly influence them- empowering students. That is why the team does multiple school talks to win the minds of the new generation through their program called SETME- Student Empowerment Through Medical Education. Based on the available evidence for a healthy lifestyle PEOPLE TREE paediatrics; Children need a MINIMUM of one hour of physical activity; a MAXIMUM of 2 hours of screen time and RIGHT 5 portions of food in right proportions on their plate. [Which includes half plate as fruits & vegetables; quarter grains like Ragi Rice and quarter proteins like dhal and dairy products like curds.]

Choose more whole grain like millets, brown rice whole wheat, oats, ragi and barley; lean protein like those from vegetables sprouts fish and egg.

To know the exact lifestyle of children today over 500 families were surveyed by the team. Information on the type of food children eat for all the three meals; the amount of screen time they spend [Eg on the phone; the TV the computer and educational media in school] the amount of time spent on physical outdoor play; time spent in restful sleep and the family time and outings were few of the key areas researched.

The survey also threw up shocking results. The results were certainly an eye opener for every parent.

Highlights of the Survey

49% kids eat junk food every day!

More than half the children do not get to play for even one hour a day

More than half of children did not eat any whole grain daily

More than one third of children do not eat fruit or vegetables daily

Up to 2/3 of children eat in front of the screen regularly

More than half the children have less than the recommended sleep hours in a day

Dr. Supraja Chandrashekar said no one really understands what is junk food. People simply thimnk eating burgers and pizzas only is Junk food. The truth is beyond that. “Any food that has a lot ofcalories but no fibre, vitamins or minerals- Empty Calories is junk. Especially if it also has the major calories are from solid fats; added sugars; salt & preservatives (SoFaSS ). Though the junk food is preferred by kids because it is very tasty, it does not make their diet complete. Some of the favorite junk food items for kids’ are- ketchup, sugary drinks, chips, sauce, fries, sweets, chocolates and pickles high in Salt & Sugars “, she said adding that any food can become junk by adding SoFaaS to it. Eg deep frying a vegetable makes it junk as the major calories are now coming from the oil / fats. The food can also become junk by deep frying, sugar coating, excessive salting breading and frying. Likewise, we can remove junk out of most foods by removing SoFaaS, “she said. Foods coming in packets will have less value as they have high preservatives or salt.

Children of today are becoming silent salt or sugar junkies / Addicted to salt and Sugar!

If the students keep on eating junk food , then they are at the risk of micronutrient deficiencies like Anaemia, vitamin D deficiency, poor immunity, constipation, early puberty and adult onset diseases like Obesity and also metabolic syndromes like heart diseases and diabetes.
