BUDGET SESSION FROM FEBRUARY 8; NO-TRUST MOVE LIKELY

BENGALURU: Amid speculation that the BJP may bring a no-confidence motion against the JD(S)-Congress government, chief minister HD Kumaraswamy on Friday met governor Vajubhai Vala to finalise the dates for the joint and budget sessions of the legislature. He extended the governor the invitation to address the joint session on February 6 followed by the budget session, likely from February 8. The budget could favour farmers, keeping in view the Lok Sabha polls. Sources said the government will earmark adequate funds for the Rs 46,000-crore loan waiver commitment to farmers. On Friday, Kumaraswamy met farmers’ organisations as part of his pre-budget meeting. Co-operation minister Bandeppa Kashempur, who attended the meeting, said the CM had announced farm loan waiver last time and he would protect farmers’ interests in the budget. He said issues faced by farmers on loan waiver — for instance, names not matching with those on Aadhaar cards — were being addressed with tahsildars’ help. “We’re removing some clauses to make it easy for farmers,” he added. Kashempur said farmers wanted the right Minimum Support Price for crops and implementation of the Swaminathan Committee report.
